Keys to Lifelong Learning is a course designed for developing and enhancing lifelong learning skills. The course elements include: 26 half-hour videos, textbook and workbook that present a balanced instructional experience. This course is designed for first-year college students, including first-time freshmen, transfer, and re-entry students.
Lesson Titles/Descriptions
- Education Today: Getting Started - This first lesson will provide an introduction to the broad topic areas that will be covered through the course and look at the nature of college education today. It will explore how education promotes success; resources for students are discussed.
- Learning Styles: Using Your Strengths - This lesson will explore how students learn, and looks at ways to help them build on their learning strengths. Learning styles are discussed and three assessment tools are used to help students develop their very own learning style profile.
- Self-Awareness: Knowing Who You Are and What you Want - The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand themselves better so they can make appropriate choices about their college degree programs and careers.
- Goals and Values: Mapping Your Course - This lesson will help students define their values and develop education and career goals. Students will develop a personal mission based on those values and goals.
- Time Management: Fitting It All In - Students will discuss the importance of time management in helping to handle the time demands of school, work and family. This lesson will also help students to establish goals, prioritize and plan their time effectively.
- Critical Thinking: Tapping The Power of Your Mind - The purpose of this lesson is to expose students to how the mind processes and creates meaning from the facts and ideas they encounter. Students will learn about the Thinktrix Mind Action system and critical thinking processes to help solve problems and make decisions.
- Clarity and Creativity: The Building Blocks of Understanding - The purpose of this lesson is to understand what critical thinking is, why it's important in today's world and how to use questions to stimulate thinking.
- Reading: Your Keys to Knowledge - This lesson will help students improve their reading skills and comprehension of textbooks. Students will also learn about the SQ3R survey reading method.
- Reading Between the Lines: Critical Reading - The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand why critical reading is important and to help them develop critical reading skills.
- Note-taking: The Skill of Getting It Down - The purpose of this lesson is to discuss the importance of good note-taking skills. Students will learn about taking notes from lectures and from textbooks.
- Effective Writing: Communicating Your Message - The purpose of this lesson is to explore the three elements of effective writing and why writing is important: Topic, Purpose, Audience.
- The Writing Process: Steps to Successful Writing - The purpose of this lesson is to explore the four main steps in the writing process: planning, drafting, revising and editing.
- Conducting Research: Learning From Others - The purpose of this lesson is to provide an overview of the research process, and research strategies, tools and methods. Video and textbook exercises will include how to evaluate resources and using research tools.
- Do You Hear What I Hear: Honing Listening Skills - The purpose of this lesson is to explore active listening techniques and to help students improve their listening skills. Discover the importance of listening, how to become an active listener, and challenges and problems.
- The Memory Chip: Remembering Information - The purpose of this lesson is to explore how memory works and the role of memory in learning new information. Video and online exercises will explore how to use visual images as memory aids.
- Test-taking: Showing What You Know - The purpose of this lesson is to provide techniques for studying and preparing for tests. The online activities will take students through a series of test strategies and practice tests.
- The Art of Test-Taking: Mastering Any Test - The purpose of this lesson is to prepare students for dealing with test anxiety and provide strategies for taking tests and answering various types of questions.
- Relating to Others: Appreciating Your Diverse World - The purpose of this lesson is to facilitate students' appreciation of diversity and the benefits of learning about other cultures.
- Getting Along: Respecting Others - The purpose of this lesson is to help students develop and maintain successful relationships with others. Special focus will be on applying relationship skills to working in teams.
- Skills for the 21st Century: Technology - The purpose of this lesson is to provide students with an overview of the role of technology in the workplace and strategies for developing technology skills for the information age. Web activities will include using the Internet search engines to find specific information.
- Skills for the 21st Century: Math - The purpose of this lesson is to help students improve their math study skills and overcome math anxieties. The video panelists will discuss how math fits into their everyday lives and the importance of being proactive in using math skills.
- Skills for the 21st Century: Science - The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to science fields of study and science skills. Various interactive lessons will allow students to explore science careers and their benefits to society.
- Body and Mind/Personal Wellness - The purpose of this lesson is to discuss health and wellness and why they are important to students. Topics to be explored in the video lecture and textbook include maintaining a healthy body, mind and spirit; balancing your life; handling stress; and the role diet, exercise and rest play in doing well in school.
- Managing Your Future: Reality Resources - The purpose of this lesson is to help students research and explore career paths and to learn how to juggle work and school. Students will explore career options and begin to create a portfolio documenting career interests and resource information.
- Money Matters: Starting Out Right - The purpose of this lesson is to discuss financial planning and money management strategies. Students will create a ten year financial plan and a monthly income and expense budget.
- Managing Change: Lifelong Journey - The purpose of this lesson is to help prepare students to be lifelong learners who are able to handle success, failure and change. Topics to be explored in the video lecture and textbook include dealing with change; handling success and failure; giving back to the community; and lifelong learning.
