- Emphasize critical thinking, analysis, problem solving and communication skills relating to financial information
- Provide a balance of applications in financial and managerial accounting to meet the academic needs of both accounting and non-accounting majors
- Reduce emphasis on detailed procedures while covering the basic accounting cycle and emphasizing analysis of the impact of transactions on financial statements and the connections between cash and accrual based accounting
- Highlight the relevance of the subject matter to careers in accounting and business.
- Employ active "learning to learn" strategies for the student

Accounting in Action is packaged in two formats to accommodate the balance of applications in financial and managerial accounting required in a variety of settings, including manufacturing, merchandising and service organizations.
- The Principles of Accounting format is split 65% Financial / 35% Managerial
- The Financial/Managerial format is split 50% Financial / 50% Managerial

Both versions expand on the traditional "procedural & technical" approach to accounting to include a broader view of the real world of accounting applications for decision making.
