A new introductory physical geology course is now in development. Designed for complete online delivery, including an online lab, the course combines text, interactive activities, Flash animations, integrated video modules, and test banks to make a rigorous and comprehensive lab science course. Physical Geology is designed as a true scientific course, with the goal of teaching –
· Critical thinking skills – to encourage in students the ability to explore ’how’ and ‘why’, not just memorize ‘what.’
· Data collection & analysis – online lab exercises allow students to practice skills, but hands-on lab exercises with geological samples and maps from their own lab kit will require them to follow a precise data collection and analysis procedure, reinforcing organizational skills.
· Scientific process – teaching students a systematic approach to learning by developing the ability to ask analytical questions, seek answers, and make logical conclusions.
The course has a strong emphasis on plate tectonics, mineral and rock identification, and topographic map skills, lessons will immerse students in the geological world while also connecting with their everyday lives – “Why does this matter to me?”
The course structure consists of 15 lessons and 15 labs. The course modules are designed to easily integrate with campus learning management systems and instructors will have the option of modifying lesson sequence if they choose. An online faculty guide will offer tips, techniques, and best practices to ensure success with the course. Sample syllabi for use with several different textbooks will be available or the syllabus can be easily adapted to your current textbook.
The course will feature: 15 online lessons, 15 online labs, a lab manual, custom designed lab kit (to be purchased by students), and textbook of your choice. Each lesson will contain: interactive activities will reinforce textbook material, present additional information, facilitate learning of geological terminology, reinforce mineral and rock properties, and reinforce safety awareness, among other items. Flash animations and audio allow the introduction of motion to illustrate and clarify geologic concepts and processes. Integrated video modules expand on specific lesson topics, connect with real geology experts, and explore sidebars. The “MyLabPartner” video segments in the lab lessons offer a reassuring voice to demonstrate procedures, anticipate questions and encourage students as they become familiar with the scientific process. Each lesson also includes a self-assessment quiz for student progress checks and a test bank for instructors’ use. More information to come!
